The Perpetual Motion Machine

Novice Aussie and Handler's Training Diary

Things don’t always go as planned…

I had planned to write a post call “OMG OMGOMG! I’m MOVING!”

You’ll notice that’s not the title. So i’m left with a bit of a content void. :(   But it’s ok.  More often than not, things work out the way they’re supposed to.   Besides, really how miserable would i be living in Town, right?  It would have just been inside the town Carnation so, probably not that miserable with the huge yard. But i’m not going to wallow. Today.

With all of that going on the last two weeks, poor little Peanut has been forced to practice some really important commands and skills in the yard; Down, Easy (steady for other folks) and There.  Though some will disagree, I think it’s important to practice these things both on and off stock.  For Pea, it seems to help that she knows what i’m asking despite the distraction of the woolly fabulousness. Right. Over. There.  Think of it like building a good solid foundation when teaching any skill. Start without much distraction, make sure it’s solid then start adding distraction.  She’s been at this long enough that there are no treats for completing these basic skills. Those were faded out a long time ago.  The reward is usually our stand in piece of livestock – Simon (poor poor Simon).  I’ll down her on the rare occasion when she’s at a full tilt as practice.  “Good girl, Go play”.

I’m still frustrated with my lack of driving ability.  With all the changes that have been going on lately i’m hesitant to make any rash decisions.  Really, i think i just need to buckle down, swallow my anxiety and try it with a group of 5 or 6 lambs in the big field.  That’s where the not-fetchy sheep are, so that might be where we need to be as well.  Can’t hurt (too much) to try.
